Prior to going for an interview for a job, it is helpful to know as much as you can about the company. When doing an interview, if you are able to talk with the interviewer about their company, it will make it look as you are very interested in working for them. Do your research by asking around about them or looking them up online.

No matter what your education or your work experience, do not be too picky about what kind of job you want. Sure, there may be a field you are very interested in, but you cannot discount another field if there are more opportunities in it. You can always take your second choice job until your first choice job becomes available.

Remember that an interview is your chance to sell yourself as a future employee. Don’t talk about what you want the company to do for you. Employers aren’t interested in that at this stage. Instead, make sure you focus on everything you can bring to the table. Make the employer understand why you should be hired instead of other candidates.

Sarcasm and cynicism have no place in a job interview. While many people use these tones as a means of breaking the ice or establishing rapport, neither sentiment is particularly effective in a professional context. Potential employers are more interested in the ability to communicate with others in a positive, encouraging and supportive manner. A negative tone may also come across as indicative of someone who holds grudges and is prone to conflict.

As silly as it may seem, be sure the email address, you use when applying for jobs is an appropriate one. Your current email address can be something cute or personal, but when you apply for a job, it does not make you look very professional. Most email providers offer free sign ups so it will not cost you anything to create a professional email address.

If you’re nervous about an interview, think about it differently. Think of it as a “test” interview. Imagine that you’ve already got the job, or that you’re not interested in the job at all. This instantly relaxes you, and you can stop being nervous and just have a conversation. A lot of the time, that will get you hired.

When going into an interview, it is just as important to be polite and friendly to the receptionist as it is to be polite to the interviewer. You never know if the interviewer will ask the receptionist how your demeanor was toward them. It will make you look better if the receptionist says you were polite.

When you are at a job interview, and you are asked if you have any questions, always ask questions! You need to engage with the interviewer and show them that you have interest in the company. Be careful though, do not ask simplistic questions that could have been answered with a little research prior to your interview.
